TERRA FIRMA translates to ‘dry ground,’ or literally, the ‘firm earth’ a wry name considering over half the site is located well beneath Savannah’s hundred year flood zone.
In approaching the integrated learning and science center on Hutchinson Island, water damage, erosion to the site, and the objects left behind or exposed due to the natural occurrence of weathering contributed to the design process. The building presents a solid mass to approaching users, but moving through the spaces the form ‘disintegrates,’ becoming open and transparent.
